GROK GUIDE
How to Recover a Deleted Grok Conversation
The honest answer first: if you deleted a Grok conversation, there is no native trash or undo to bring it back. Grok removes deleted chats from your sidebar immediately. Still, run through these checks before giving up — and set up prevention so it never happens again.
Step 1: Make Sure It Is Actually Deleted
Grok history lives in your X account and is shown both at grok.com and inside X's Grok surface. The two surfaces occasionally disagree because of cached state:
- Check the sidebar on both grok.com and x.com/i/grok.
- Sign out and sign back in, or hard-refresh — a stale cache can hide conversations that still exist.
- Check your browser history (Ctrl+H / Cmd+Y, search "grok.com") for the conversation URL. If the link opens the chat, it was never deleted.
Step 2: Check Your Data Exports
If you previously requested an xAI account data export (Data Controls → Download account data), the ZIP you downloaded contains prod-grok-backend.json with every conversation included at export time. A deleted chat may still be in an older export file. This only helps if you exported before deleting.
Step 3: Accept What Cannot Be Recovered — Then Prevent It
If the conversation is gone from both surfaces and you have no prior export, it is not recoverable through any official path. xAI does not offer a recycle bin for chats, and support cannot restore individual conversations.
What does work is making deletion survivable:
- Import your existing history once into a local archive you control.
- Auto-save every new conversation in real time, so a complete copy always exists outside Grok.
Delete something in Grok by accident and the local copy is still there — searchable and exportable.
Never Lose a Grok Chat Again with ChatEngram
ChatEngram imports your Grok history into a searchable local library and captures new chats automatically in the background. Accidental deletions stop mattering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can xAI support restore my deleted Grok conversation?
No. There is no official recovery path for individually deleted conversations.
Does Grok keep a trash folder?
No. Deleted conversations leave the sidebar immediately.
My conversation disappeared but I did not delete it — what happened?
Check both surfaces (grok.com and X), refresh, and re-sign-in. If it is still missing, check whether you are signed into the correct X account — history is tied to the account, and a different login shows a different history.
How do I stop losing Grok conversations?
Keep your own copy outside the platform: periodic manual exports via Data Controls, or automatic capture with a tool like ChatEngram so every conversation is archived in real time.
