GROK GUIDE
How to Export Grok Chat History (JSON, Markdown & PDF)
Grok does not have a one-click export button in the conversation view, but xAI does provide an official account data export. Depending on whether you need your full history or a single conversation, here are the methods that work.
Method 1: Official Account Data Export (Full History)
xAI's official export covers your entire Grok history at once:
- Open Grok settings and go to Data Controls.
- Choose Download account data (also reachable at accounts.x.ai/data).
- xAI prepares the export and emails you a download link.
- Download the ZIP. Inside,
prod-grok-backend.jsonholds all your conversations — every message, timestamp, and model used — plus your Imagine posts.
What you get is raw JSON: complete, but not human-readable. It is a backup format, not something you would read or share directly. The export is also manual — you have to request it, wait for the email, and download it each time.
Method 2: Export a Single Chat (Markdown or PDF)
For individual conversations, browser extensions can save the open chat directly — typically as Markdown or PDF with one click. A print-to-PDF bookmarklet achieves the same for the chat on screen: open the conversation, print, save as PDF. These are fine for one-off saves, but they are manual per conversation and do not help once you have dozens of chats.
Method 3: Import Once, Export Anytime Automatically
The two-step pattern that removes the manual work:
- Import your existing history once — bring past Grok conversations into a local archive.
- Capture new chats automatically — every conversation is saved in real time as you chat, so there is always a complete, exportable copy.
From there you can export single chats or batch-export everything as clean Markdown or JSON — with code blocks and formatting preserved — whenever you need, no waiting for an email.
Export Grok Chats Anytime with ChatEngram
ChatEngram imports your Grok history and auto-saves new conversations in the background. Export as Markdown or JSON whenever you need, or sync directly to Notion or Obsidian for long-term storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Grok have a native export button per conversation?
No. There is no built-in per-chat export in the Grok interface. The only official path is the full account data export described above.
What format is the official Grok export?
A ZIP containing JSON (prod-grok-backend.json). Conversations, Imagine posts, and assets are all in that one file. Account and billing files in the archive are separate.
How long does the official export take?
xAI prepares it after your request and emails a download link. Timing varies; it is not instant.
Can I export Grok chats to Notion or Obsidian?
Not natively. Export the JSON via the official path and convert it, use a third-party exporter extension, or use ChatEngram's direct Notion/Obsidian sync.
Is my Grok history tied to my X account?
Yes. Conversations are stored against your X account and appear both at grok.com and inside X. If you lose access to the account, you lose access to the history — another reason to keep your own export.
