Privacy Policy

Our Privacy Commitment
ChatEngram is built with a local-first privacy architecture. By default, your AI conversations, prompts, and exported notes are stored locally in your browser storage (IndexedDB) on your device. We do not transmit your conversation content to our servers, we do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your conversations to train machine learning models.
1. Information We Collect
We collect and process the following categories of information strictly to provide and maintain the functionality of ChatEngram:
A. AI Conversation & User Content (Stored Locally)
When you use supported AI web interfaces (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot) or import local coding-agent sessions (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI), ChatEngram captures conversation text, prompt history, AI responses, code blocks, timestamps, and conversation titles. This data is stored directly in your browser's local storage.
B. Account & Authentication Information
If you sign up for an account or activate a license, we collect your email address and an encrypted user identifier provided via our authentication partner (Clerk).
C. Billing & Subscription Data
When you purchase a Pro or Lifetime plan, transactions are processed securely by Stripe. We only store payment status, license keys, and subscription plan metadata. We never receive or store your raw payment card numbers or banking details.
D. Technical & Diagnostic Telemetry (Anonymous)
To troubleshoot bugs and ensure extension stability across browser updates, we may collect anonymous technical information, including extension version number, browser type, anonymous installation ID, and crash error logs. This technical telemetry never includes conversation transcripts, prompts, or sensitive message content.
E. User-Configured Integration Credentials
If you choose to enable third-party integrations (such as Notion database sync or custom AI summary generation), we store your user-provided API tokens locally in encrypted browser storage.
F. What We Do NOT Collect (Zero Browsing History)
ChatEngram does NOT collect, record, track, or transmit your web browsing history (the list of web pages you visit) or general web activity. ChatEngram does not monitor websites you visit outside of the explicitly supported AI tools, and does not record keystrokes, form entries, or search engine histories.
2. How We Handle and Use Your Information
We use the collected information solely for the following functional purposes:
- Local Search & Indexing: Building an instant, local full-text search index across your saved AI chats and coding sessions.
- Knowledge Base Export: Converting conversations into formatted Markdown, JSON, or plain-text files on demand.
- User-Directed Sync: Transmitting selected conversations directly from your browser to your connected tools (such as Notion or local Obsidian vault folders) only when you initiate or configure sync.
- Account & License Management: Authenticating your user identity, issuing license keys, and maintaining active plan access across your authorized devices.
- Customer Support: Responding to inquiries and troubleshooting technical issues sent to our support channels.
Important Policy Statement: We do NOT sell user data to data brokers. We do NOT use personal data or conversation content for personalized advertising or credit scoring. We do NOT use your conversations to train public or proprietary AI models.
3. Data Storage, Security, and Retention
A. Storage Locations
- Local Browser Storage: All conversation content, prompt history, and full-text search indexes are stored locally on your device using
IndexedDBandchrome.storage.local. - Server-Side Storage: Our cloud database (managed via Supabase) only stores account authentication IDs, email addresses, license records, and plan tiers. Conversation content is NEVER sent to or stored on our cloud servers.
B. Data Security
We implement industry-standard encryption protocols (HTTPS/TLS in transit) and strict access controls for account management endpoints. Local data is protected by your operating system and browser sandbox environment.
C. Data Retention
- Local Conversations: Retained in your browser until you explicitly delete them from the ChatEngram dashboard or uninstall the browser extension.
- Account Data: Retained for the duration of your active account or until you request account deletion.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, rent, trade, or monetize your personal information. We only share necessary data with trusted service providers who adhere to strict data security standards:
- Clerk: Provides secure user sign-in, session management, and authentication infrastructure.
- Stripe: Handles payment processing, checkout compliance, and billing management.
- Supabase: Provides secure database infrastructure for user account metadata and license key verification.
- User-Configured Services (Notion, Obsidian, Cloud Storage): When you explicitly link your Notion account or sync files to local folders (which may sync with Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive), data transfers occur directly under your direction subject to the respective third party's privacy policy.
5. Chrome Extension Permissions Justification
ChatEngram requests only the minimal permissions necessary to perform its core functions:
Required to store conversation archives, tags, search indexes, and user preferences locally in browser IndexedDB without hitting quota limits.
Required to detect and parse active conversation DOM elements on supported AI websites so chats can be automatically captured and saved locally.
Required to open the ChatEngram spotlight dashboard, settings panel, and detect when you are actively viewing a supported chat page.
Required to inject content parsing scripts into supported AI chat tabs upon user navigation.
6. User Rights and Data Deletion
You have full control over your data at all times:
- Data Portability & Export: You can export your entire conversation library into standard Markdown, JSON, or text files at any time through the dashboard.
- Local Data Deletion: You can clear individual chats, clear selected folders, or perform a complete local database wipe via the extension settings. Uninstalling the extension immediately removes all browser-stored data.
- Account Deletion: To request permanent deletion of your account metadata and associated email records from our server database, send an email to support@chatengram.com. Requests are processed within 30 days.
7. Children's Privacy
ChatEngram is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or solicit personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal data to us, please contact us immediately so we can remove the information.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable laws. When changes are made, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be accompanied by an in-product notice or website announcement.
